A holiday wreath is the perfect way to welcome guests to your home this season. This beautiful accent can complement a wide array of holiday décor, from classic white icicle lights to dazzling, multi-colored designs or even a winter wonderland of inflatable characters. Or, if you don’t feel like going Clark Griswold on your home this year—a simple, classic wreath might be all you need to add a touch of holiday cheer without going overboard.

Just be careful. If the wreath is not hung correctly, it can permanently damage your front door, leaving unsightly holes and scratches.

Here are three possible ways to hang a wreath without damaging your front door, no hammer and nails required.  

1. Hang it from Your Door Knocker

The best way to avoid damaging your door is not to hang the wreath on the door itself. If you have a door knocker,  hang it from there instead.  This works best for lightweight wreaths (typically less than five pounds). Simply tie some ribbon around the wreath hook and secure it to your door knocker. To make this front door addition look more polished and purposeful, it’s best to use a ribbon color that complements your wreath.

To keep the wreath from banging against the door whenever it’s opened or closed, add a door protector wreath pad.

2. Use an Over-the-Door Hanger 

If you don’t have a door knocker or if you have a heavier wreath, try an over-the-door wreath hanger. They work with all with front door materials and fit over most standard door sizes. They’re also available in a variety of colors and finishes to blend right in with your door or even complement your holiday décor. Just make sure to choose an over-the-door hook with padding. This will help prevent the hook from scratching your front door.

To install, simply slide the wreath hanger over the top of your front door. Make sure the “J” shaped portion is facing outward so you can hang the wreath outside of your home. Before calling it a day, test to ensure that your door can still open and close with ease. In rare cases, an over-the-door-hook may interfere with the weatherstripping at the top of your door, causing performance issues.*

3. Try Non-damaging Self-Adhesives 

If an over-the-door hook won’t work with your door, try a self-adhesive hook instead. This is a relatively inexpensive option, and installation is generally quick and easy. Self-adhesive strips also shouldn’t leave a mark on fiberglass or other types of door materials. Just be sure to read the instructions before installing so you know for sure.

Before installing a self-adhesive hook, you’ll need to clean your door. Refer to your front door warranty for instructions so you know exactly what type of cleaner and cloth to use. Once the area is clean and dry, center the self-adhesive hook high on your front door and secure it. If you have a metal front door or glass panes, you can use magnetic or suction hooks instead. Just be sure they are sufficiently strong to support the weight of your wreath.

If the wreath is hanging too high, adjust by adding a piece of ribbon to the wreath hook. Tighten the ribbon as needed to get the perfect drop. This way, you won’t have to remove the self-adhesive hook and start the process all over again.
